2024 Semester One Mandarin Curriculum

Foundation

Foundation students learned the numbers 1-10, colours, simple Chinese character strokes and character formation. They consolidated their understanding of greetings, basic self-introductions (telling their names and age), farewells, and terms for family members and feelings. Students were exposed to a variety of Chinese cultures including stories about pandas, dragons and the Moon Festival; as well as a basic comparison between Christmas and Chinese New Year celebrations. Learning activities included games, craftworks, singing, Better Chinese online lessons and Quizlet.

Year 1

Year 1 students learned about vocabulary for body parts, simple Chinese character strokes and character formation. They revised topics including their like/dislike of colours, terms for family members, numbers 1-20, greetings and self-introductions in Chinese. Students were exposed to a variety of Chinese cultures including stories about pandas, dragons, the Great Wall, Terracotta warriors and the Moon Festival; as well as a basic comparison between Christmas and Chinese New Year celebrations. Learning activities included games, craftworks, singing, Better Chinese online lessons and Quizlet.

Year 2

Year 2 students explored vocabulary for drinks and relevant sentences. They focused on building new words by combining familiar meanings such as apple + juice = apple juice. Students learned some Chinese strokes and character formation. They consolidated their vocabulary knowledge including fruits, action words, colours, terms for family members, greetings and self-introductions. Students were exposed to a variety of Chinese cultures including stories about pandas, dragons, the Great Wall, Terracotta warriors and the Moon Festival; as well as a basic comparison between Christmas and Chinese New Year celebrations. Learning activities included games, craftworks, singing, Better Chinese online lessons and Quizlet.

Year 3

Year 3 students continued to build upon their animal, action and feeling-related vocabulary through learning the story ‘Little Chicken’. They explored Chinese food and cooking related vocabulary through recipe projects. Differentiated learning tasks were designed to cater for both Chinese second language learners and Chinese background language learners. Classroom activities included recipe and comic book projects, Chinese Moon Festival celebrations and a basic comparison between Christmas and Chinese New Year celebrations.

Year 4

Year 4 students continued to learn the story ‘A Little Cat Looking for a Home’ to build upon their Chinese vocabulary and sentence patterns in relation to animals, actions, family members and feelings including likes/dislikes. They explored Chinese food and cooking related vocabulary through recipe projects. Differentiated learning tasks were designed to cater for both Chinese second language learners and Chinese background language learners. Classroom activities included recipe and comic book projects, Chinese Moon Festival celebrations and a basic comparison between Christmas and Chinese New Year celebrations.

Year 5

Year 5 students continued to build upon their identification and transportation related vocabulary through learning the story ‘How do I get there?’. They explored Chinese food and cooking related vocabulary through recipe projects. Differentiated learning tasks were designed to cater for both Chinese second language learners and Chinese background language learners. Classroom activities included recipe and comic book projects, Chinese Moon Festival celebrations and a basic comparison between Christmas and Chinese New Year celebrations.

Year 6

Year 6 students continued to learn the story ‘The Three Little Pigs’ in Chinese, paying attention to the same sentence structures. They explored Chinese food and cooking related vocabulary through recipe projects. Differentiated learning tasks were designed to cater for both Chinese second language learners and Chinese background language learners. Classroom activities included recipe and comic book projects, Chinese Moon Festival celebrations and a basic comparison between Christmas and Chinese New Year celebrations.

FRENCH  Years  5 and 6

Students are introduced to the French language in Years 5 and 6.  Students will continually practise oral conversations. To support writing in French, they  will learn the alphabet, the numbers  0 – 100, prepositions, nouns, verbs and pronouns to help develop their understanding of the language.
