2024 SEMESTER ONE CURRICULUM

Foundation

Foundation students focused on exploring art principles and elements, including line, colour, value, shape, form, space, texture, contrast, emphasis, unity, repetition, pattern, balance, movement and rhythm. They became familiar with Art room practices, routines and safety. Students used scissors effectively, and developed their drawing skills, colouring, gluing and pencil grip.  They experimented with pencil, crayon, mixed media art techniques, and were introduced to collage, creating multi-structured/layered art pieces. Students made layered mountains, radiating patterned suns, under the sea crayon and watercolour ocean animals.

Year 1

Year 1 students focused on art principles and elements, including line, colour, value, shape, form, space, texture, contrast, emphasis, unity, repetition, pattern, balance, movement and rhythm. They created a collage lion inspired by artist Matisse and contemporary artist Marc Paper Scissor, exploring how paper strips can be manipulated into many different textural lion mane hair effects. Students explored construction and mixed media of materials to make their own paper plate and egg carton UFO’s and Plasticine aliens.

Year 2

Year 2 students focused on art principles and elements, including line, colour, value, shape, form, space, texture, contrast, emphasis, unity, repetition, pattern, balance, movement and rhythm. They developed a series of projects centred on texture, emphasis, contrast, shape and the use of positive and negative space. Students explored ‘on’ and ‘off’ canvas paint mixing techniques, directional brush strokes, rubbing texture stencils, crayons and watercolour resist, linework, textas and mixed media materials. They created a colourful 3D decoupage small bowl, utilised line and paint in fauve portraits and combined clay and layered collage to make flowers.

Year 3

Year 3 students focused on art principles and elements, including line, colour, value, shape, form, space, texture, contrast, emphasis, unity, repetition, pattern, balance, movement and rhythm. They developed skill in working with hessian, cotton and needles and were inspired by cultural art and individual artists. They explored mixed media work in phases, strengthening ingenuity, flexibility and the ability to focus on one art element at a time. Projects included textile cushions, 3D diorama Van Gogh bedrooms, bean pictures, guided drawn cats and dragon collage.

Year 4

Year 4 students focused on art principles and elements, including line, colour, value, shape, form, space, texture, contrast, emphasis, unity, repetition, pattern, balance, movement and rhythm. They created a 2D felting piece that incorporated texture, layering, fine motor needlework skills and emphasis through colour/form. Students further developed textile skills through string art, exploring using space, colour, nails and string placement, through a planned and applied design.

Year 5

Year 5 students focused on art principles and elements, including line, colour, value, shape, form, space, texture, contrast, emphasis, unity, repetition, pattern, balance, movement and rhythm. They created a tessellation project, demonstrating their understanding of pattern, colour balance, paying attention to colouring, placement, line, cutting and pencil skills. Students were inspired by historical and contemporary Aboriginal art and responded through lino cutting/etching and printing that centred on line, implied texture, emphasis, contrast, printing and cutting techniques. They explored indigenous symbols to make a picture within a picture using a layered approach, which centred on colour-mixing techniques and detailed brushwork.

Year 6

Year 6 students focused on art principles and elements, including line, colour, value, shape, form, space, texture, contrast, emphasis, unity, repetition, pattern, balance, movement and rhythm. They created a collaged large-scale toned animal that focused on layering, tone of colours and painting to add shade to a single colour (monochromatic) art work. Students designed a felt puppet; sewing, cutting, designing and layering. They followed instructions to draw a puppet to scale that was visually appealing and functional for their Foundation buddies. Students learnt needle threading, knotting and joining stitch skills. They made a toned-inspired self-portrait using collage and painting techniques and concentrated on realistic drawing with emphasis on scale, texture, positioning and pencil skills.
